Peace Notes

Another cruise ship stopping in San Francisco for a day included
passengers on a 'round-the-world 4-month journey. One elderly
couple commented that the ship's captain had made an observation that there were 29 nationalities aboard, and everyone was getting along fine. If different cultures aboard a ship can share an enjoyable trip around the world, why do these different cultures have such a difficult time getting along in the real world?
After offering Creating Peace postcards to people from many countries around the world, it is reassuring that most people are welcoming to the idea of peace and enthusiastically accept postcards to send to friends and family. Ninety-nine percent of the time, recipients have made very positive comments.
I met two men visiting from out of town who commented to me about how friendly everyone in San Francisco has been to them, and how great it is to walk around and enjoy the scenery. It turned out they live in Los Angeles where apparently people are not as friendly and everyone drives around in cars, limiting the opportunity for pleasant outdoor walks and random visits with friendly strangers.
Upon offering each of them some free SIGNS OF PEACE postcards, they were thankful and commented: "This is great, but you probably don't have our language on here."
When I asked about their native language, they replied Armenian, adding that their word for peace is very long. Of course, I knew the word was there and gave them a few seconds to locate it. The surprised look on their faces was priceless. All I asked in return was for them to speak the word for me so I could hear it pronounced correctly -- Khaghaghootioon.
Thanks, guys!
I met two women wearing traditional Arabic garments and we talked for awhile. One of the women lives in San Francisco and was hosting a relative visiting from Palestine. They were very happy to receive the SIGNS OF PEACE postcard, and I asked them what is their word for peace...Salam...which they readily pointed out on the card. They gratefully accepted several free cards and the visiting woman agreed to send them to friends in Palestine. We discussed the current difficult situation there, and one of the women pointed out how the USA (and San Francisco) is a much safer and saner place to live without the hostilities and conflicts so evident in her country.
